Baltimore Sun recognizes Schatzel and Baum as “women to watch”

The Baltimore Sun recognized Towson University President Kim Schatzel and professor Jan Baum as two of 25 women to watch in 2016. They were acknowledged for their hard work and diligence, their leadership qualities and their ability to be consistently proactive women in their field of work, according to the article.

“I was honored to receive that recognition from The Baltimore Sun, but to me what it really means is we have an outstanding university — with exceptional students, faculty and staff — and that I am surrounded by a great team,” Schatzel said. “This recognition is a reflection of everyone’s hard work and commitment… I could not be more excited about where we are and where we’re going.”

Schatzel has been Towson’s president since January 2016, and her priorities include implementing diversity measures, getting Towson students better careers and internships and bridging the gap between the Towson business community and the school.

Baum is the director and founder of “The Object Lab” 3-D design opportunity at Towson and acts as the director of the entrepreneurship minor in the College of Business and Economics.

Baum teaches design and social entrepreneurship classes at Towson. She led a statewide leadership initiative around 3-D printing, and she continues to nurture students and be a positive role model outside and inside of the classroom setting.

Baum said that she hopes the entrepreneurship program at Towson will give future leaders a chance to grow individually and brighten their own futures.

“I was really pleased with The Suns program of the 25 Women to Watch, because it wasn’t the same old, same old,” Baum said. “They selected a broad variety of women in different fields and different industries so that was also very nice… I love what I do. I have a lot of energy and I’m just driven to make the world a better place.”
