Cornelius leads Tigers to third place finish

The Tigers put together an outing that featured production from up-and-down the lineup, earning their second third-place finish of the season. Towson finished tied for third in the Starmount Forest Fall Classic in Greensboro, North Carolina.

“The biggest piece I’ve tried to bring to the table is a real positive, encouraging experience,” said head coach Shannon Briggs. “That mindset is crucial and I think they’re realizing that.”

Sophomore Jordan Cornelius finished tied for second in the player leaderboard after carding a final round 74. Cornelius finished the tournament with nine birdies and was one of three Tigers to place in the top 20 individually.

“[Cornelius has] been very steady and consistent, without making any sort of errors on the course,” Briggs said. “When she does have the odd mishit, she has a strong mindset that she’ll capitalize and save par. And that is what’s going to equate her in having some low rounds.”

Cornelius had an opportunity to make a push for the top spot, but carded pars on the final six holes of the course, as she finished three strokes behind the winner.

Sophomore Julia Calomiris and senior Erica Han finished 13th and tied for 19th, respectively.

That’s exciting to have that core nucleus of consistency,” Briggs said. “The biggest piece I was pleased with was highlighting [Calomiris] opening round of 74, which is the lowest opening round that she’s had at Towson. I can see the confidence in her. Once she signed off on her first 18, you could see the happiness in her face.”

Towson had the second-lowest team score after the first round, but tied for the third-highest score in the second round, putting the team in a tough spot to climb out of.

“The biggest challenge when playing 36 holes is you can start strong, but sustaining that throughout the day,” Briggs said. “Sometimes the middle of the round is where we can improve on.”

Han’s third round score was impacted by a +4 on the fifth hole. Han managed to go hit even par the rest of the round.

That is a real testament that she’s got the mindset and focus to not let a whole round go sideways on her,” Briggs said.

The overall finish gives the Tigers confidence heading into their lone home tournament of the fall season.

The timing is excellent, given that we’re playing a showcase conference tournament going to Delaware toward the end of October,” Briggs said. “It never hurts to play your home tournament. I think the girls are going to be energized and I think we’ve got enough of a break that we can see things come together as we wrap up the fall.”

The Towson Invitational takes place on Monday, Oct. 14 and Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Eagle’s Nest Country Club in Phoenix, Maryland.
