Doubles pairs shine as Tigers keep improving

The Tigers bumped their record up to 6-11 on the season after an eventful week of matches against Mount St. Mary’s, California University of Pennsylvania and West Virginia University.
On March 30, the girls faced off against West Virginia University, falling in a 7-0 shutout.
In singles play, freshman Amelia Lawson fought hard against her opponent, taking the game to a 7-point set. But, Lawson was defeated in straight sets.
Freshman Phoebe Collins forced her singles match to three sets after winning the second set 6-4, but could not close on the third set and was defeated.
On March 29, the team faced off against California University of Pennsylvania, securing a 7-0 victory.
“Towson tennis took it to California University of Pennsylvania from the start today, and finished strong,” Peterson said. “Our third shutout victory of the year was convincing.”
The three regular doubles pairs were unstoppable, each fighting their way to easy victories.
Collins, senior Yevgeniya Shusterman and freshman Themis Haliou each won their singles matches in blowout straight sets.
Martinez took a 6-2, 6-4 victory to capture the unanimous win for the Tigers.
On March 27, the Tigers (6-11, 1-1 CAA) defeated Mount St. Mary’s 6-1 at home.
Head Coach Jamie Peterson was proud of the team’s efforts.
“It was a positive day for us,” Peterson said. “We are adjusting to playing in the outside conditions and improving in every match.”
The doubles teams of Shusterman and sophomore Alexa Martinez, Collins and Lawson, and junior Claire Bedi and freshman Jessica Assenmacher all took home victories as the Tigers swept the doubles points.
Towson impressed in singles play. Shusterman won with a 6-0, 6-1 victory, and Bedi also won in straight sets.
Haliou finished off the match with an individual victory.
Peterson is focused on closing out the season strong as the team returns home to face UNCW, Delaware State University, Drexel University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore this weekend.
“We almost pulled out a couple of wins and had lots of tight second sets,” Peterson said. “Now comes the most important part of the season where we have eight of the last nine matches at home, as well as three conference games, which will have a big influence on seeding at the conference tournament.”
Towson’s first weekend match is against UNCW Friday afternoon. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
