Field Hockey: Tigers struggle to show up after weekend loss

The Tigers (0-2) suffered a tough weekend on the field falling to St. Joseph’s (1-0) in the season opener on Friday and to Temple (0-9) on Sunday.

In Philadelphia, Friday afternoon, Towson was led by freshman forward Devon Hake – scoring the team’s lone goal.

The game remained scoreless until St. Joseph’s Tori Popinko deflected the ball past the Tigers’ goal from an assist by teammate Melissa Herd with 10:20 remaining in the first half.

With three minutes left in the half, the Hawks scored again off of a penalty corner by Jenny Morris, assisted by Amy Smit and Popinko.

At the halftime whistle, Towson goalkeeper, junior Megan Boyle, totaled six saves.

In the 36th minute, Hawks’ forward Jackayln Pauling put the ball in the back of the net off of a rebound from Boyle, giving the Tigers a three-goal deficit. The Tigers responded three minutes later when Hake scored on an assist from Heather Jenney.

St. Joseph’s’ Monica Tice scored with 15:18 left in the game and Jenny Morris secured the win in the 64th minute putting a rebound from teammate Katja Hansen past Boyle.

Boyle recorded 11 saves against the Hawks’ Amelia Deibler’s three. The Hawks defeated the Tigers 5-1.

Two days later, the Towson saw Temple in College Park, Maryland, losing 9-0. Temple scored twice in the 5th minute, a penalty corner from Tricia Light and Paige Gross on a rebound from Sarah Deck giving the Owls an early 2-0 lead.

At 14:32, Deck scored unassisted increasing St. Joseph’s’ lead by one.

Freshman Erika McKay made a defensive save for the Tigers denying Sarah Keer, but Katie Foran converted on a penalty corner giving the Owls a 4-0 lead at the end of the first half.

At halftime, Towson’s goalkeeper, sophomore Emilee Woodall, recorded seven saves against Temple’s twenty shots on goal.

In the first nine minutes of the second half, Temple expanded their lead by three with goals from Deck, Rachael Muller, and Alyssa Delp.

At the 45th minute, Boyle was substituted in for Woodall to finish the game. The Owls’ Sarah Keer and Jessika Daniels finished the scoring with 9 goals for Temple.

Boyle saved seven shots in the second half, and totaled 15 saves combined with Woodall.

The Tigers’ home opener is this Friday, Sept. 4th at 6 p.m.
