Men’s Golf: Looking to finish long term goals

The Tigers are looking to recapture the success that has been elusive for the past few seasons. Towson finished eighth at the CAA final tournament last season.

Since that moment, the men’s golf team has been working to improve their scores for the upcoming season.

Two years ago, the Tigers finished second in the CAA while winning three tournaments that year.

Towson’s last tournament win was at the Lehigh Invitational in Lehigh, Pennsylvania on October 2014. Since then Towson has had some strong performances sprinkled throughout unsuccessful efforts.

When Head Coach Brian Yaniger reflected on how to improve on the main problems from last season there was one word that came up repeatedly: consistency.

Coach Yaniger believes his team has the talent to win.

“We were not out of a lot of matches last year, we just struggled to put it all together as a team,” he said.

Yaniger was also quick to point out the work that his team had done to become a more formidable team.

Junior Jimmy Grem will be hoping to develop into one of the top golfers in the conference.

Juan Veloso will be looking to put in more performances like those from his freshman year in which he won rookie of the year in the CAA, and placed first at the CAA conference finals of that year.

Along with the hard work put in by the golfers returning to Towson, the team will benefit from newcomers like Dylan Stein from Flemington, New Jersey.

Yaniger referred to Stein, who garnered multiple awards at Hunterdon Central High School, as someone who can make an impact.

Stein will help contribute to the team effort at one clear long-term goal according to Yaniger, which is to win the CAA conference title so the team can compete at the NCAA tournament.

For the short-term goal coach Yaniger was also clear, “In the seven fall tournaments, we need to determine our best five golfers for the spring.”
