The Towson Women’s Ice Hockey team opened the season by ending a long losing streak over the weekend.

“Last season we were 0-14, so this is the first win in two years,” junior forward Kelsey Leone said after the game. Sophomore Wing Lily Warshaw had a hat trick to lead the Tigers to a 12-5 win over the George Washington University Colonials.

Head coach Jessie Rushing stressed the importance of starting the season off with a big win.

“It went incredible for our first game of the season.” she said. “We just want to keep it up, get better every game.”

A shot from Sophomore Defender Kaylah Dailey opened the scoring in the fifth minute. A 15-foot slapshot rocketed in the net for Dailey’s first of the game.

The Tigers added three more goals in the space of two minutes. Junior center Sarah Syme advanced the puck the length of the rink and shot between a defender’s legs to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Tigers after nine minutes. The Colonials refused to go away, scoring twice to put pressure on the Tigers.

After a little bit of back-and-forth leaving the score at 5-3, Dailey gets her second of the game from far right to grow the lead to three halfway through the second period. Dailey would also assist on another goal in the second period.

To close the second period, sophomore Defender Emily Sellers put her whole arm into a shot from the blue line to mark Towson’s last score of the game and make the score 12-3.

“Going into the last period, I think we’re pretty confident, we’ve scored a lot of goals but we’re trying to work on our passing now.” Sellers said.

Despite a small rally by George Washington in an otherwise dull third period, Towson emerged victorious, already beating last year’s win total in game one.

The Tigers next home game is at Ice World in Abingdon, Maryland, approximately 30 minutes from campus. They will face Montclair State University on Saturday Oct. 12 at 10:50 a.m. For more information on Women’s Ice Hockey visit tuwih.org.
