Burger talk

By: Jonathan Munshaw, Editor-in-Chief

There’s a joke around The Towerlight office that everyone at some point wants “Five Guys” in their mouth. Get it?

Of course, we’re always referring to the Five Guys burger joint, because a burger from Five Guys is one of the greatest delivery systems for red meat in the world.

Now, in my effort to lose weight, I can’t be going out to Five Guys every time I want a burger.

A1 sauce? Slather it up. A little fry? Who do you think I am? Give me the regular size. Cheese? You bet. A “little” burger? No, give me the two patties, we’re here on business.

Over time, that seriously adds up.

So, I created this recipe for an Asian chicken burger that is far more flavorful than a generic burger (whether it’s with red or white meat) and gives you the ability to stack up the toppings and put it on a bun.

Certainly making stir-fry is always fun, but who wouldn’t like taking all of those flavors, shaping it into a patty, and throwing it on the grill.

I’m just putting the recipe for the burgers here, but sides could include sweet potato fries or a steamed vegetable of your choice (the first time I made these burgers I just put some asparagus in a frying pan and served that as the side).

Asian chicken burgers

 Ingredients

  • 1 small carrot
  • 1 red onion, cut in half
  • 1 lb. ground chicken
  • ¼ cup Panko bread crumbs
  • ¼ cup hoisin sauce (You can find this in any grocery store with the other Asian foods)
  • 1 – 4 tsp. Sriracha (depending upon if you even like Sriracha, or how much you like it)
  • 4 tsp. low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tsp. ground ginger
  • Handful of sliced white mushrooms
  • 2 tsp. sesame seed oil
  • Juice of one lime
  • Wheat hamburger buns

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees
  2. Spray a baking sheet or baking pan with non-stick spray
  3. Shred a half of the onion and carrot into a bowl (or use a food processor to finely dice them)
  4. Mix all of the ingredients besides the other half of the onion and the mushrooms in a bowl. Form the mixture into four patties, and place them on the baking sheet
  5. Cook until done, approximately 20 minutes
  6. While the patties are cooking, sauté the mushrooms and the other half of the onion in a pan with some oil or butter
  7. Serve the patties topped with the mushrooms and onion
