Towson had a rough weekend, suffering losses to George Washington and Rutgers, 6-1 and 7-0, respectively.

During the away match against George Washington (6-4) on Sunday afternoon, the Tigers (2-8, 1-0 CAA) started off slow in doubles action and could not recover after a loss from sophomore Alexa Martinez and senior Yevgeniya Shusterman, 7-5.

“We fought really hard and were competitive in most of the singles matches, but it was too little too late,” said Head Coach Jamie Peterson. “We lost two singles matches in tough, close, tiebreakers.”

Freshman Phoebe Collins won the sole match of the game for the Tigers with impressive 6-0 and 6-3 wins.

Senior Lucy Gloninger had an intense singles match, dropping the first set 6-2 and winning the second 6-3. She eventually lost the third set 11-9.

On Saturday, the Tigers fell 7-0 to Rutgers (6-2) in a tough loss at home.

Martinez and Shusterman put up a valiant effort, but eventually lost their doubles match 6-4.

Gloninger and freshman Themis Haliou pushed their opponents in their singles matches, but ultimately were defeated in straight sets.

“The team didn’t do anything particularly well against Rutgers,” Peterson said. “Overall, we were pretty flat.”

Next, the Tigers play James Madison in their second conference match of the year in Harrisonburg, Virginia on Friday at 3 p.m.
