Towson finishes third at College Park

Towson’s team finished third in a quad-meet on Friday at the University of Maryland, College Park. Towson fell behind a first-place tie between Maryland and George Washington, who both had 194.950. The Tigers trailed with a total score of 194.425 followed by fourth-place William and Mary with 190.550.

The team began the meet on bars, where freshman Tyra McKellar led the Tigers for the event with a score of 9.725 to tie for sixth place. McKellar’s teammate, senior Samantha Lutz, finished with 9.700 for eighth. The Tigers earned a team score of 48.450.

Senior Lauren Ross led the Tigers on beam with a score of 9.800 to tie for second. McKellar and sophomore Bridget Steffen both scored a 9.750 for the event and tied for sixth place. Freshman Lauren Cahalan placed eleventh with a score of 9.700. The Tigers earned a team score of 48.675.

The team finished strong on the floor exercise and earned a team score of 48.925. McKellar led the Tigers for the second time for the evening with a score of 9.850. Freshman Noelle Harada placed second for the Tigers and tied for seventh overall with a final score of 9.800. Lutz finished with a 9.775 to tie for 10th place.

The Tigers finished the meet on vault with a total score of 48.400. Junior Katie Sassa finished first for the team and tied for seventh in the event with a score of 9.825. McKellar finished 15th for the event with a 9.700 followed by senior Janis Konkle with 9.650, Cahalan with 9.625 and Lutz with a 9.600, tying a career high.

McKellar took second for the all-around competition with her total score of 39.025.

“We’re definitely going to focus on the smaller things like landings and getting our handstands up,” McKellar said. “We’re going to work harder this week at practice and we’re all really excited to be back at home next week and we’ll hopefully have that fire under us.”

The team will host its third home meet Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in SECU Arena against Michigan State, Rutgers and Yale.
