Towson set another season-best score and defeated Rutgers 195.675-194.275 Friday at SECU Arena.

“This group of girls continues to prove that they can handle adversities thrown their way,” Head Coach Vicki Chliszczyk May said. “Being able to rebound the way they did off Monday’s meet shows the type of team this really is.”

The Tigers scored a season-high 49.275 on the floor exercise with juniors Tyra McKellar (9.925) and Gabriella Yarussi (9.900) both setting career highs in the event.

McKellar became just the 11th Tiger in school history to record a 9.925 or higher on the floor.

Yarussi won the all-around competition with a score of 39.225 while McKellar placed 2nd with a score of 39.175.

Towson’s performance comes off a rough outing at Eastern Michigan Monday, when a weak balance beam performance landed the team a score of 47.200 in route to a 196.00-193.075 loss in the dual meet competition.

“The girls were able to correct the uncommon mistakes made on Monday to show up for a strong performance in front of our fans,” Chliszczyk May said.

In addition to a victory and a season-best score, the Tigers accomplished another season goal, finishing a meet without recording a single fall.

“This is a big personal accomplishment for the team,” Chliszczyk May said. “We have been struggling with this having unrecorded falls, and to have a meet going 24/24 on routines shows the focus these girls have.”

The Tigers look to finish their season off strong as they head to the EAGL Rivals hosted by Pittsburgh for a quad meet that also includes Michigan State and West Virginia on March 3 at 6:30 p.m.
