A new kind of horror movie

The found footage genre has been showing signs of strain over the last few years, but once in a while something will surprise you. That brings us to the movie “Unfriended,” which premiered April 17 and takes place almost entirely on a computer screen.
One year before the movie is set, high school student Laura Barns took her own life after an embarrassing video of her was posted online. On the anniversary of her death, six classmates gather together for a video chat via Skype. Suddenly, a mysterious seventh person enters the chat using Laura’s account. The students try to figure out who or what is causing this and soon a series of horrific events unfolds during the chat. If they leave the chat or stop talking the user warns them someone will die.
I didn’t have many expectations for this film, which is why I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It has excellent pacing, really good suspense and some funny moments as well. The last ten minutes were the most terrifying as more secrets were revealed. I also didn’t think it would end the way that it did. This is one of the best horror movies of the year. I give “Unfriended” eight out of 10.
