Towson’s Black Student Union and Sisterhood group were doing more than just raising money last weekend; they were helping to build a future.

“We’re raising money not only for charity but for someone to get an opportunity to have what we have currently, we’re helping them get an education,” junior and president of Sisterhood Ashley Yusuff said.

The Cupid Shuffle Annual Charity Date Auction, which took place on Friday, Feb. 6 from in the West Village Commons ballrooms, was a charity event held to raise money for House of Ruth, a shelter for battered women and children stationed in downtown Baltimore.

The sold out event also helped to raise money for a scholarship fund for a high school student from Randallstown who plans to attend Towson next semester.

“This particular one, since we’re doing scholarships, means the whole world to me because I’ve always wanted to do a scholarship program,” Yusuff said.

The date auction consisted of 21 candidates who each described a date and then were bid on by members of the audience.

“I thought it was amazing and fun. I really enjoyed it. It was all for a good cause,” senior Jessica Oyawale who was also a contestant in the date auction said. “This was so out of my comfort zone, but yeah I think I would do it again … I raised $40 which I know isn’t a lot but it’s still something.”

Dates included roller skating, dinner, bowling, movie tickets and even a couples massage, indoor rock climbing, laser tag, and tickets to a comedy club and a Wizards game. The bids for the dates ranged from $25 up to $200.

“It’s a fun way to donate, junior and Sisterhood vice president Mika Chappell said. “It can be difficult to give back and do community service … At some point whether people want to admit it or not we’ve all fallen on hard times. We have to say, “I’m not too good to help people who are struggling.””

The event also included food, music, dancing and performances by Killa Motionz Commercial Dance Collective (KMDC) and the Towson BSU Voices Slam Team.

Senior and former president of Sisterhood Erica Middleton said that the event was wonderful because it was all about what ‘sisterhood’ stands for.

“Service is what you should aspire to do in college, service is what we’re here to do,” she said. “House of Ruth is a great organization that serves women and children of this community, it’s our duty to help them.”
