Taking a LAP

By: Christine LaFrancesca, Staff Writer

On April 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. the Hussman Center for Adults with Autism, a relatively new center at the Institute for Well-Being, will host their annual LAPS for Autism event in Towson’s Johnny Unitas Stadium in an effort to continue to foster the lives of adults with autism.

This fundraising event will provide the Hussman Center with affordable programs for adults with autism, as well as integrate approaches that will enhance the achievement of their self-determined goals.

“We’re here to help adults with autism find who they are and what they enjoy,” Charlotte Exner, Executive Director of the Hussman Center said. “LAPS for autism is a fundraiser that not only helps us maintain our programs, but also allows us to tailor those programs to best suit everyone’s needs. A fully integrated, neuro-diverse community is what we are striving for.”

With over 100 adults taking part in the programs, The Hussman Center offers “an exciting array of programs,” Exner said.

“Every program is taught by someone with a degree that deems them appropriate to teach that particular class,” she said. “We have everything from cooking to social and even comedy programs.”

Interested parties can sign up for LAPS for Autism at http://tinyurl.com/lapsteamsignup.

“We want as many people as we can to come out, make a team and walk or run laps with us. You can sign up on our website and make a team for you and your friend, family, student organization or whomever you want,” Exner said. “It’s exciting to see how many sororities and other student organizations have joined.”
