University sends out measles warning

University officials sent out a campus-wide email Wednesday morning alerting students to the renewed national presence of measles. No recent cases have been reported in Maryland.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, the disease “starts with fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes, and sore throat. It’s followed by a rash that spreads over the body.”

The disease is highly contagious but preventable through vaccination or prior exposure.

“The measles mumps rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective and is administered in two doses, once after 1 year of age and again between the ages of 4 and 6,” the email read.

Failure to receive the complete series can result in lack of protection from the disease.

Students in need of the vaccine, or who are unsure of their immunity, have been encouraged to contact their individual healthcare provider or call the TU Health Center at 410-704-2466. Immunity can be determined through a blood test.

According to the advisory email, students on campus who believe they have measles alert the Health Center and make plans to return home.
