Fall 2016 fashion trends

Happy first semester, Tigers!

The month of September not only marks the beginning of a new school year for us college students, but also the beginning of new trends. New York Fashion week kicked off this past Thursday and a lot of fashion inspiration came along with it. Even though the actual shows were geared toward Spring 2017, the amount of fall-appropriate street-style was what caught the attention of many. From gorgeous garments to technical textures, New York set the stage for this year’s fashion expectations.

Now don’t get me wrong – as much as I love fashion, I also love practicality and more importantly, comfort. Do I think that everyone should take the time to honor the pure beauty that is a perfectly constructed high-heeled shoe? Yes. Do I think that college students should walk around in such a piece of footwear on campus? Absolutely not.

I get it. It’s much easier to bum it out and wear a tee and some comfortable sweatpants to class every day. Locating and wearing the least-wrinkled item you own is already a lot of effort when you’re in college. From classes and sports, to jobs and internships, we already have a ton to stress out about in our lives – our clothing should not be one of those things.

Luckily for you, I have found easy and affordable fall trends that you can rock on campus in order to balance style with serenity. These pieces can be found in fast-fashion shops, so you won’t have to worry about blowing your budget. With these trends, you will be able to easily get through your classes, and look good while doing so.

Let’s make this fall a season to remember!

WOMEN’S FALL 2016 TRENDS:

  • Off-The-Shoulder Tops

Time to brush some dirt off your shoulders! These tops are perfect for a seasonal transition – you can start to rock the long sleeves again while still allowing your body some cooling room. Long walks across campus + an off the shoulder top = no more sweaty discomfort.

  • Platform Sneakers

Who said heels and sneakers couldn’t mix? This style of shoe gives added height while still being practical enough to walk around campus in. Add some cool details like leather or sparkle and your shoes will be the “walk” of the town!

  • Velvet

This fabric choice is making an early comeback this year. Usually associated with awkward family photos for the holiday season, velvet has reemerged as fall’s go-to texture due to its subdued sophistication. This cloth will be able to keep you warm in class as the weather cools down in the coming months, while simultaneously sending off the vibe of cool-girl glamour.

  • Chokers

Lace, pearls, rhinestones – chokers come in all sorts of materials and sizes, and can add sudden interest to any outfit. No matter what style you have, this accessory comes in a version that will surely fit your style needs. Bonus: you don’t have to worry about this necklace getting tangled up throughout your day full of classes, especially in ones that involve a good amount of movement. Get ready to look like the Tumblr “baddie” you are with this easy trend.

Guys – don’t think I forgot about you! I’ve done some research on men’s fashion trends as well. Here are the looks that are hot for fall!

MEN’S FALL 2016 TRENDS:

  • Co-ords

Coordination is key this fall, gentlemen. Matching tops and bottoms are not just for business days – finding the perfect comfy co-ords will not only look good, but will make picking out your clothing that much easier.

  • Zip-up Track Suit Tops

The athleisure trend is still going strong, and the men’s fashion shows were full of these athletic jackets.

  • Earth Tones

Deep browns; rich greens; cool blues – channel your inner brother-nature this fall with earthy hues.

  • Graph Print

Graphs aren’t just for your 8 AM math class. Grid printed clothing pieces are what’s happening in men’s fashion.

UNISEX FALL 2016 TREND:

Bomber Jackets

These jackets are at the top of the list for Fall 2016 [for both men and women]. The key to this trend is personalization. Get creative – go for bombers with interesting fabrics and graphic details or prints in order to stand out from the crowd. This trend is not only fashionable, but extremely useful, especially as we get into cool fall weather and football season. Make sure to wrap up in this jacket and prepare yourself for a season that is about to be (you guessed it): the bomb.
