Tigers start 3-0 at Campbell

Towson’s season-opening trip to North Carolina was a successful one. The team is off to a 3-0 start after sweeping a doubleheader Saturday against the Youngstown State Penguins and St. Johns Red Storm and defeating the Campbell Camels on Friday.

Despite not being able to take much batting practice outdoors this offseason, the Tigers’ offense scored a total of 26 runs in the three games.

“We came out with a plan of attack,” senior pitcher Missy McCormick said. “We wanted to be an all-around more aggressive team this season and it really shined throughout our first weekend.”

In the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday, the Tigers downed the Red Storm 7-4. Freshman pitcher Megan Dejter made her debut for the Tigers against the Red Storm and she did not disappoint.

Dejter relieved freshman pitcher Olivia Balatazar, who threw just 1.2 innings. Dejter threw 5.1 shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four.

The Red Storm jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second inning, but the Tigers bounced back by scoring six more runs in the next three innings.

McCormick tied the game in the fourth with a two-run home run, her first of the season. Junior pitcher Ambar Hickman gave the Tigers the lead in the fifth inning with an RBI double to drive in freshman infielder Brook Miko.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Tigers beat the Penguins by a score of 9-2.

Junior pitcher Ambar Hickman threw a complete game and allowed two runs. Hickman also contributed with the bat to help her own cause. She went 2-for-3 in the game and blasted her first home run of the season in the sixth inning.

Friday’s game against the Camels was a nail-biter, but the Tigers held on for the 10-9 victory.

McCormick got the start on the mound and was able to secure the win. She threw four innings and allowed five earned runs.

Miko led the team with three runs batted in. The freshman from Silver Spring, Maryland had an impressive weekend at the plate. In the three games, she went 6-for-13 with three doubles and seven runs batted in.

The Tigers will head to Greenville, North Carolina this weekend to play four games in the East Carolina tournament. They’ll play a doubleheader on Friday, one game on Saturday and one game on Sunday.

First pitch against East Tennessee State on Friday is at 10 a.m.
