Towson stretch of York Road to undergo construction starting mid-November
By Sarah Sternhagen, Editor-in-Chief
A stretch of York Road in Towson will undergo construction starting the second week of November, according to transportation officials.
Workers will replace the water main pipe that goes under York Road, starting at Newell Avenue at the edge of Towson University’s campus and going up toward the roundabout that intersects East Joppa Road and Allegheny Avenue.
Construction will happen block by block from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, according to Jordan Vogt, the chief of Engineering Systems Design Team from the Maryland Department of Transportation.
Vogt estimates construction will finish in spring of 2028, though they will still aim for the initial end date. Initially, the work was supposed to start shortly after Labor Day this year and finish in fall of 2027.
The $9.8 million project will replace the main waterline under the road, which is 90 years old, according to Vogt.
“Once this gets done, it’ll actually complete the majority of York Road improvements,” Vogt said.
Officials will work with local businesses to coordinate water shut offs so they don’t affect daily operations, according to Vogt.
After the new waterline is installed the crews will also repave certain parts of the road, upgrade existing traffic signals, and make sidewalk ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Traffic lanes may be temporarily shifted during construction and some sidewalks will be blocked off during construction, according to Vogt.
Pessoa Construction Company is the general contractor for the project.
