Towson volleyball’s Irbe Lazda wins CAA honors for second-consecutive week

By Jake Shindel, Deputy Sports Editor

Towson volleyball (6-1) outside hitter Irbe Lazda can do it all. One week after winning CAA Defensive Player of the Week, the redshirt junior was named CAA Offensive Player of the Week.

Lazda did something only two CAA Volleyball players accomplished last year by winning back-to-back recognitions. Delaware’s Lani Mason won two straight CAA Offensive Player of the Week awards, and Hofstra’s Izadora Stedile won two consecutive CAA Rookie of the Week awards. Neither Mason nor Stedile won different awards in back-to-back weeks like Lazda.

The Tigers went undefeated in five matches across four days this past weekend, and Lazda led the charge. She averaged 4.25 points and 3.56 kills per set throughout the weekend.

After the strong weekend play from Lazda, she currently ranks first on the team in points, points per set, kills and kills per set while standing in third on the team with a .407 hit percentage.

Lazda also continued her strong start to the season on the defensive end, averaging 1.06 blocks per set over the weekend. She’s currently second on the team with 29 blocks so far this season.

Towson faces a challenging task ahead. The team travels to Washington State this weekend with matches against two top-15 teams in BYU and Washington State.
