TUNE Recap: Edible Book Festival competition charms participants

By: Alex Hevesy, Contributing Writer

TU Northeast celebrated its first Edible Book Festival with appearances from Food Network “Cupcake Wars” winner and La Cakerie owner Jason Hisley, La Cakerie Wedding and Event Coordinator Lauren Delfico and Dean of University Libraries Deb Nolan.

TUNE Library Associate Eden Parks planned the festival and competition, which drew over 50 entries from 30 TUNE students who competed to make the best book-themed dish. Participants were judged in four categories: Most Appetizing, Most Literary, Best Pun and Best in Show.

Kayla Tome’s fruit and cupcake-based creation based on the book Going To The Firehouse took first for Most Appetizing, while Lauren Jessee won Most Literary for her Rice Krispies Treat interpretation of Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree.” The award for Best Pun went to Nicole Bauer and her deceptively tasty Poop Pops, inspired by the book “Everyone Poops.” The overall Best In Show award went to Ashley Kibling and Sarah Venters for their carrot cake creation based on the book “Creepy Carrots.”

After the judging, students were allowed to taste the entries themselves.
