Towson offense surges late, salvages draw vs. UMBC

After losing to Saint Joseph’s, Towson looks to get back in the win column vs. its in-town Baltimore rival UMBC. The Tigers are looking for their second win of the season. But a battle back and forth would lead to a tie, 1-1.

The Golden Retrievers took the lead early in the half as junior Payton Schenning put one in the net.

The Towson offense was flat most of the first half as it struggled to execute five corner kicks and drive down the field, while the UMBC defense held strong.

A cornerstone for the Retrievers was Kalli Williams, who was a brick wall with eight saves.

Towson finally got its offense going on a late possession, which led to a goal by Riley Matthews to even the score at 1 heading into halftime.

Coming out of the half, the Tigers looked to break the tie and take the lead.

In the second half, both offenses sputtered and the defenses stepped up as many shots on goal were either saved by the goalkeepers or went out of bounds.

Both teams tried to get their offense going, though neither gained the upper hand and the match ended in a tie.

A bright spot for the Tigers was sophomore Teagan Gardner, who had four saves as an anchor of the Towson defense.

Possession seemed mostly in Towson’s favor as the Retrievers managed only nine shots, including five on goal. Towson, on the other hand, finished with 23 shots, 10 on goal, and four saves. The Tigers move to 1-2-2 on the season.

Towson’s next game is at George Washington on Sunday at 1 p.m.
